Quick n’ Dirty Rental Income

Pool’s closed. Due to filming.

Bloomberg reports a creative way to pay the mortgage if you’re in the Southern California area – movie producers are still looking for locations for shoots, and you can potentially rent your home out for about $1k/day, or $5k/day if you don’t mind if productions of an adult nature are filmed in your bed:

“We are getting a lot of calls,” said Joseph Darrell, whose Los Angeles-based Joe Darrell Location Service represents Gupta. “They say, ‘Can you help me to bring a production to my home, because I have trouble making my payments.’”

The daily fee paid for the sort of work done at Gupta’s 3,000-square-foot condo in the city’s signature 90210 ZIP code is usually $2,000 to $3,000, Darrell said. That would cover about half of her monthly household bills, including maid service.

Not only does the money look pretty good, but the IRS allows you to rent out your home for residential filming for 15 days without incurring any tax penalty (not sure if the State of California would consider this income, but it’s California, it probably does). Still, depending on the going rate, that’s up to $75,000 in income that’s at least not subject to federal tax.

Possible pitfalls include, as Bloomberg mentions, coming home to find that the producers have painted your living room Day-glo yellow, and, as Bloomberg does not mention, the necessity of draining and disinfecting your hot tub after Spa Skanks 29 is filmed in it.$5k/day will more than cover your cleaning service, though.
