Some of our more esteemed Senators are convinced that Bernanke will actually be confirmed to keep being Fed chairman – so convinced, apparently, that they’re having to work around the Senate’s zany cloture rules just to make sure he gets his vote, but other Senators get to sleep easy at night not having actually voted to confirm him.
Democratic leaders in the Senate are asking colleagues who are reluctant to support Bernanke’s nomination for a second term as Federal Reserve chairman to nevertheless vote with them to end a filibuster and allow a vote on the actual nomination. The reluctant members would then be free to vote no to express their displeasure. Several Democrats have committed to just that and others are considering it.
Jeez, it’s almost as if being named Person of the Year doesn’t count for anything anymore. Remember a few years ago when You won, and Your confirmation sailed right on through? But now if enough Senators agree to this cunning plan, this whole stupid fight can finally end and we can all move on to another stupid fight, which is the exact definition of democracy.
