A quick one before my morning beating resumes: Consumer Reports finds that credit card issuers are doing everything the new consumer protection law says they can’t before said law takes effect next February.

Anticipating the February trigger of the Credit CARD Act’s final phase, banks have dramatically raised interest rates, imposed new fees, jacked up old fees, and changed terms, a new report by the Pew Charitable Trusts says. In fact, 100 percent of cards issued by the nation’s 12 largest banks used practices that would be considered “unfair and deceptive” under the new law, the report says.

Sadly, CR was beaten to the scoop on this story by anyone who has ever so much seen a credit card, as well as anyone not currently in a coma. Everyone else knew this would happen back in December when the new rules were first issued.

For what it’s worth, CR recommends that if you must get a credit card, get one from a credit union. Something about not needing to turn a quarterly profit to appease shareholders makes credit unions less likely to try to fit both fists up there. You know where I mean.
