Hugo Chavez is fast becoming a hotel baron. He nationalized a Hilton in Caracas a few years ago, rechristened it the Hotel Alba, and recently spent some time at another Hilton on the island of Margarita, which he decided he liked so much he’d add it to his portfolio too:
President Hugo Chavez ordered the nationalization of the resort, which is owned by local firms facing troubles with the government’s financial oversight body. The resort, which is managed by Hilton Worldwide, has 280 rooms and 154 time-share suites, according to the presidential decree ordering the takeover.
Chavez recently held court at the hotel as he welcomed more than 30 leaders from South America and Africa for a summit. Among the visitors was Gadhafi, who set up his emblematic and heavily guarded tent at the hotel’s private beach. Mugabe walked through the hotel’s halls surrounded by a ring of bodyguards.
We like to think Mugabe also has his bodyguards ‘make it rain’ some worthless Zimbabwean currency whenever he walks through a hotel, nationalized or not, as well, but we digress. Hilton, owned by Blackstone ($BX) now, actually didn’t own this property but instead just managed it; presumably they’ll be losing that gig unless Chavez gets a wild hair and decides to keep them on. Not likely though:
The hotel, which includes a casino, a marina and five restaurants, will help in the development of tourism projects in “a socialist framework,” according to the decree signed by Chavez.
None of those restaurants will ever serve freedom fries. Ever. Hey, Chavez, while you’re nationalizing Hiltons, do you think we could get you to take Paris off our hands? We’re over her. Really, really over her. And she’s not as busted as Courtney Love, who we heard you had your eye on.
