I Guess Weighing In On Mark Sanford Is Unavoidable

So some state governor had an affair. Who cares? It was the kind of story Jason and I discussed off the grid when he first went missing, but there wasn’t anything to make it worth posting here. Other than, well, the obvious joke of  “So THAT’S why he wanted to reject the federal stimulus for his state – he already had himself a stimulus package arranged elsewhere!” that I’m surprised I didn’t see anyone pick up on.

But, there’s a couple things I found interesting enough. First, he billed some of his indiscretions to taxpayers:

South Carolina Governor Mark Sanford admitted to using taxpayer dollars to pay for his trip to see his mistress in Argentina and said he plans to repay the cash. Sanford on Thursday did say he’d pay back an undisclosed amount for the nine-day trip to Brazil and Argentina for which taxpayers paid $12,000 last year. That includes $8,687 for Sanford’s plane ticket, and $453 in lodging. Project manager Ford Graham’s ticket was $1,910.

Second, Sanford apparently had a thing for the women of finance. His wife Jenny was an investment banker; it turns out his paramour is a commodities trader:

[Sanford was]  5,000 miles away in Argentina with a glamorous divorcee named by local newspapers as Maria Belen Chapur, 43, said to be a commodities trader with Bunge and Born, a grain trading corporation. She is believed to have studied at St. Catherine’s College, Oxford, and is fluent in English, Portuguese and Mandarin.

You just don’t think of South Carolina as a hotbed of finance. What the hell makes all these trader chicks want to go there?

And Lauren sends me this from Huffington Post – Jimmy Fallon takes Mark Sanford’s words and creates karaoke. Good for a laugh:

If Sanford resigns, I know Jason will miss having him to kick around.
