Perhaps realizing the only way a Jerry Yang is gonna make a living is through the World Series of Poker, the CEO of Yahoo decided yesterday that no amount of reshuffling the deck chairs on the search-engine has-been is going to make a difference in the wake of his epic failure to accept Microsoft’s hay-we-don’t-like-cash-on-our-books-let’s-set-it-on-fire bid.
The Economist writes about Yang this morning in much warmer tones than LOLFed generally uses, characterizing him as a dreamer who, well, could never successfully articulate his dream:
Mr Yang does not deserve the blame for all of this year’s woe. Bad things can happen to nice people. But he never gave a convincing answer to the question of what Yahoo!’s strategy should be in an ideal world. To be a “starting point” for half a billion web surfers, Mr Yang likes to say. But how is that different from the old “portal” idea which stopped working long ago, or the search box that Google in effect controls?
I’ll just go ahead and throw my one idea for saving Yahoo out there. They should’ve just harnessed all their image-processing power after they bought Flickr and specialized in porn.

I’m sitting here, trying to think of a direction that Yahoo can go, but I can’t think of a thing. Google pretty much does better everything they do, except maybe the finance section. Perhaps they should concentrate their efforts there, and maybe also message boards and improving Flickr.
