BLIND ITEM: What Company Is Hoarding Food For Its Execs?

October 21st, 2008 by alyx · 10 Comments · bartertown, breaking news, commodities

LoLo called some story to my attention today where MSNBC today reports that people are hoarding food for the end times. TEOTWAWKI OMGWTFBBQ! Okay, so a few panicked folks trying to go off the grid and ensure they won’t have to go get their beans from Master Blaster in Bartertown – at least, not for the first year or so after TEH ENDTIMES – not really funny to LOLFed.

But then… they throw this out there.

Richard Mankemyer, general manager of the Survival Center, in McKenna, Wash. said he too is swamped.

“There are a lot more people interested in being prepared, stocking up and being on their own for extended periods of time, as we’ve been advising,” he said. Among them are businesses, he said, including a major Northwest corporation that recently spent “tens of thousands of dollars” to stock up on shelf-stable foods for its executives. He would not identify the company, but he said he urged the officials to stock up for its other employees as well.

Major Northwest corporation. Okay. Whomever could it be?

  • Boeing, anticipating that they’ll be barricaded in their Seattle offices by Union protesters?
  • Starbucks, expecting a riot after The Great Colombian Coffee Bean Inflation Of 2009?
  • WaMu? Um, too late, probably. But who knows, 20,000 blocks of Velveeta could be appearing on JPM’s balance sheet as a result of this transaction.

As with all blind items, your guesses are welcomed.
