No More Golden Parachutes, No More Golden Toilets

OK, the restrictions in the bailout bill on those scandalous golden parachutes have been done to death, so here’s some info on a scandal involving a golden toilet. From WSJ:

HONG KONG — 3D-Gold Jewellery Holdings Ltd. said it has called in auditors to investigate a financial shortfall that came to light after the death of its founding chairman.

3D-Gold, formerly known as Hang Fung Gold Technology Ltd. and locally famous for installing a solid gold toilet in a sales facility, said its inventory “might be substantially less than previously reported.”

This story has a lot going on – a mysterious death, a golden throne, an empty vault – that should make for excellent financial doomsday journalism. This from today’s Hong Kong Standard:

Police arrested 3D-Gold Jewellery Holdings chairwoman Jane Chan Yam-fai, 45, widow of late company founder Lam Sai-wing, and four other 3D-Gold employees yesterday in connection with the theft of HK$179 million worth of gold bullion from the company.

Earlier this week, Bank of Tokyo- Mitsubishi UFJ filed a petition to the High Court demanding loan repayment of HK$24 million from a subsidiary of 3D-Gold.

Oh dear. His wife took him out, and now Mitsubishi UFJ wants their money? After Lam Sai Wing’s death at the end of September, trading in the company was suspended for 30 days, and unfortunately, there may not be a 3D-Gold for us to write about for very long. The above revelations have led to debt downgrades from both Moody’s and S&P, and, unsurprisingly, a lack of trust from gold depositors.

If they liquidate, I wonder to what country the golden toilet will be shipped off (or if Mitsubishi UFJ will get it and install it in Morgan Stanley’s offices as a reminder of who is keeping them afloat). Anyone still got that kinda filthy lucre with the DOW below 9K and oil below 75?
